Part of a larger residential project in Southern California, the exterior lounge areas of the property were of particular interest as we needed to creatively utilize a compact space with exposure to harsh solar rays and still maintain an adequate amount of light and comfort in the area. The shading device rises on thin timber columns and divides and folds into three sculptural planes creating smaller voids for sunlight to penetrate.

 Cedar slats of varying depth are attached to the roof structure to provide shade and create a linearly porous surface to allow for continuous air flow. A secondary layer of larger angled wood slats are attached on the top face of the shading structu

A secondary layer of larger angled wood slats are attached on the top face of the shading structure. A lush green wall system covers the outermost walls and contrasts with the angular geometry and contrasting materials in the architectural features.
